It’s a Relay victory

In the words of the Relay event chair Leslie Doss, “What an incredible night! We celebrated, remembered, and fought back! From the beginning with Cecil Chandler welcoming Relayers as they arrived to set up campsites, little Kansas Cassidy as our Honorary Relay Chair leading off the Survivors’ Lap, Michael Holt, Jay Lucas and Gerald Malloy beautifully reading names in our Luminary ceremony, pledging yourself to save just one life this year in our Fight Back ceremony all the way to the final victory lap after our Closing ceremony at 7 a.m, we could not have been more blessed.”

Cancer doesn’t discriminate
Young men get cancer, too

Cyclist Lance Armstrong, figure skater Scott Hamilton, football player Brian Piccolo and Chris Thomas of Hartsville all have something in common. Cancer. To be more specific, they all were diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Young adults, especially men, may think they have nothing to be concerned about when it comes to getting cancer, but they are wrong. Virtually no age group is immune to this disease.

‘Have hope for today, Living for tomorrow...’

As the date for Relay for Life in Darlington County – April 25 – approaches, several cancer survivors are telling the story of how they cope with their illness and how Relay for Life takes on a special meaning for them.

Louise Hoffman said she goes with her church, Cornerstone Baptist. She also goes to the cancer support group held at her church.

Cancer survivor says don’t be fooled;
it happens to the very young, too

In August 2007, just two months after her sister passed away from breast cancer, Charlene Gardner of Society Hill discovered a lump in her breast while undergoing a self-exam. Her first thoughts were that she was too young for this to happen even though her family had a history of breast cancer. She was the healthy one. This wasn’t supposed to happen to her, a mother of three, ages eight to 15 months.

Gardner, who was born in Pennsylvania but moved to S.C. with her parents to take care of grandparents, grew up in Darlington. When she discovered her cancer, Gardner had just stopped breastfeeding her youngest child and went for an exam.

Lamar’s Art in the Park this Sunday

Hugh Holcombe is a self-taught musician. He is a harmonica player who likes playing “Jump blues.”

“I like playing the fast blues that you can shag to,” said Holcombe, who belongs to several shag clubs. Shagging is another of his passions.

“I play for fun,” Holcombe said. “I can’t read a note of music.”
