County Council hears courthouse study
DARLINGTON – The Darlington County Council convened a special session Tuesday night. They met to hear the findings of the Carter, Goble and Lee (CGL) companies regarding the recent space feasibility study done to determine the best possible location for a new courthouse for Darlington County.
Senior associate Anders Kaufman and associate Alice Painter presented their findings along with several contracted architects and engineers.

Soldiers with S.C. Army National Guard units return home from Afghanistan
DARLINGTON — Soldiers from Darlington’s National Guard unit and other S.C. Army National Guard units were late when they arrived at the Darlington National Guard Armory Thursday afternoon.
But that didn’t matter much to the family members, friends and fellow National Guard soldiers, many clutching American flags, waiting patiently for their return.

Council to take up jetport ordinances
DARLINGTON — Darlington County Council is expected to give final approval Monday to an ordinance lowering the assessment ratio on general aviation aircraft in the county from its current 10.5 percent to 6 percent of the fair market value.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Courthouse Annex/EMS Building at 1625 Harry Byrd Highway just outside of Darlington.

GSSM breaks ground on new facility
The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics broke ground on phase two of its expansion Friday, April 25. “We are witnessing the dawn of a new era,” GSSM President Dr. Murray Brockman told the more than 100 students, faculty and guests at the ceremony. The groundbreaking celebrated the school’s 20th anniversary as well. “After 20 years, I can safely say, ‘you haven’t seen anything yet,’” Brockman said.

Police arrest suspect in bank robbery
Hartsville police arrested a man Thursday morning and charged him with robbing a Hartsville bank on Wednesday afternoon.
William Eugene Goins, 55, of 505 Emu Road, is charged with armed robbery or allegedly armed with a deadly weapon and robbery/entering a bank with intent to steal, according to Hartsville Police Chief Tim Kemp.
Goins was in jail at the Darlington County Detention Center Thursday morning awaiting a bond hearing, Kemp said.

Rosenwald third-grade teacher named district Teacher of the Year
DARLINGTON — Amber Hutchins came from a family of teachers.
The daughter and granddaughter of teachers, she said education and teaching were always topics of conversation in her family. “There was always something going on at home involving education,” she said.
So it was probably no surprise when Hutchins chose teaching as a career. She has been teaching now for 18 years.

Mozingo dies after sentencing
A former Darlington County sheriff’s deputy, magistrate and state senate candidate died Tuesday morning just hours after he pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Frank Mozingo, 66, was booked at the Florence County Detention Center in Effingham after he was sentenced to 11 years in prison Monday.

Ground broken on Vista project
HARTSVILLE — State Sen. Gerald Malloy, D-Hartsville, said Friday morning’s groundbreaking ceremony for the railyard Vista development project represents another major step in Hartsville growth.
“I think this is a great day for Hartsville,” Malloy said. “A lot of other small towns around here are not doing quite as well. Hartsville continues to be the envy of this area.”
